Zen Sunday
I took some time on Sunday April 26th to just move with the day and follow it where it led. It led, of course, to Bob's Garden Center...and since they had plenty of annuals for sale and a sale on hanging baskets...I had some fun!

So far so good with the tomatoes!! The plants are climbing over the fence!!!!!!!!
They've eclipsed the pepper plants and the chives... oh well, bigger plot next year... what's that you say? fewer plants??? BAH!!!
Nothing red yet...but I'm waiting hungrily along with my neighbors.
I come out to weed and water between episodes of Cosmos ...

OOOOH OOOH OOOH!!! What a little sunlight can dooo-hooo-hooo...
Look at the enormous difference between these two windowboxes!!! The one on the right gets almost no sun, the one on the left... some of the heavy duty late afternoon sun you see here. Impatiens have eclipsed lobelia and alyssum!

The Tomato Garden Begins!!! |

So, I finally got around to putting in a vegetable garden!! And also, finally got around to putting the pictures up. Here, according to the advice of a "green" website, I planted marigolds around my tomatoes to discourage pests. Between the tomatoes I planted basil...which is supposed to enhance the flavor of the tomato - even before you mix them together in sauce!!!
|

Those tall spikey things in the front are Chives, which are also supposted to complement the tomatoes in some fashion that I can't recall. But I am a big fan of Chives, more for their Dr. Seuss flower look than anything. They are also a great with potatoes...though I don't know if growing them together would benefit in any other way other than providing ample ingredients.
|

There are peppers here also, planted in front of the tomatoes. The benefit to peppers in a tomato garden is that... I like to eat them... preferably with SAUSAGE AND ONIONS...MMMMMMMMMM |

Yes, this entire 8ft by 4ft planting
really is all about the tomatoes. I visit this patch of land hungrily every day. Then go back in the house and chow down on pop-tarts.

Got a grill!! A regular old charcoal grill... and for now, some rather comfy - although not eco-friendly, plastic adirondacks. But since I am eliminating yardwaste by using a mulching mower, perhaps I can buy some eco-points. |

Here's the view from the chair, which I only got out of because I needed coffee. |

Now the front door, with two new hanging baskets and wind chimes... and ...Joey..
|

A better look at my begonias.

Inch By Inch...
I planted my windowboxes... impatiens, alyssum, and lobelia - and acquired a lawnmower from Kim, my co-worker and generally very silly person. I'm in love with the way the light shines through the trees in the morning, and with these very common flowering bushes which I don't know the name but really convey a sense of peace and ease with they way their branches bend gently.

The Fence ...
Took the first step toward creating a garden by the very practical application of a picket fence! The fence's purpose is to keep the dogs from roaming to where people are afraid of them...but in reality it has created a yard - and is the essential foundation for the garden!

"The Garden Song"
Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
Til the rain comes tumbling down
Pullin' weeds and pickin' stones,
we are made of dreams and bones
I feel the need to grow my own cause the time is close at hand
Grain for grain, sun and rain I'll find my way in nature's chain
Tune my body and my brain to the music of the land
Chorus
Plant your rows straight and long,
Temper them with prayer and song
Mother earth will keep you strong if you give her love and care
An old crow watching hungrily from his perch in yonder tree
In my garden I'm as free as that feathered thief up there
Chorus
